News from IEEE Guangzhou Section

1. IEEE Guangzhou Section hosted the visit from IEEE Region 10 Director, Professor Takako Hashimoto, in the afternoon of Tuesday, August 12, 2025. Professor Takako Hashimoto, Director of IEEE Region 10 and Vice President of Chiba University of Commerce in Japan, paid a visit to IEEE Guangzhou Section. She engaged in in-depth discussions with over 30 volunteer representatives from the Guangzhou Section and its Chapters, and they also had dinner together. The exchange meeting started promptly at 14:30. First, Professor Derong Liu, Chair of the IEEE Guangzhou Section, gave a detailed account of the section's development history ¡ª from its establishment as a Subsection in 2010 to its upgrade to a Section in 2017. Every step embodies the efforts and dedication of the section members. Meanwhile, Professor Liu shared the achievements made by the Guangzhou Section in recent years in terms of member activities and membership development, providing the attending representatives and Professor Hashimoto with a comprehensive understanding of the section's progress. Subsequently, Professor Takako Hashimoto delivered an important sharing session on IEEE Region 10. She not only introduced the composition of the region's membership but also elaborated on its development plan for the next five years, offering valuable reference directions for the development of the Guangzhou Section. During the free discussion session, volunteers from various chapters spoke actively and had a lively exchange with Professor Hashimoto on experiences related to chapter operations and member services, creating an active and harmonious atmosphere. This exchange activity has built a closer communication bridge between the IEEE Guangzhou Section and IEEE Region 10, and injected new ideas and vitality into the future development of the section.
2. Dr. Yu Yuan, a member from IEEE Guangzhou Section, has been elected the President of IEEE Standards Association. Congratulations! He will serve this position in 2022. Dr. Yu Yuan has served as chair of the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society Standards Committee and is currently the chair of the IEEE Guangzhou Section Consumer Electronics Society Chapter - Shenzhen. 3. One of our Section's student members, Abdur Rasool, has won the 1st Prize ($300) at the IEEE R10 Student Research Paper Contest. His work is entitled: "WRS: A Novel Word-embedding Method for Real-time Sentiment with Integrated LSTM-CNN Model," under the supervision of Professor Qingshan Jiang and coauthored by Chaojie Ji. Abdur Rasool is currently a PhD student at Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenzhen, China. He joined the IEEE as a student member in May 2021.
4. The IEEE Information Theory Society recently announced that The IEEE ITSoc Guangzhou Chapter has been named the 2021 Chapter of the Year! Congratulations! The Chapter of the Year Award annually recognizes a chapter that provides their membership with outstanding programs and activities. The prize includes $1,000 to support local chapter activities. The Guangzhou Section Chapter is being recognized for its activities and its promotion of information-theory research, which kept the chapter vibrant throughout the entire year. The chapter chair is Professor Li Chen from Sun Yat-Sen University.
